Ongoing projects
Here you will find a number of organisations that are implementing fantastic initiatives to battle plastic and microplastic pollution. Please feel free to check them out and support them if possible.
Beat The Microbead
Beat the Microbead is a global campaign by the Plastic Soup Foundation aimed at eliminating microplastics from cosmetics and personal care products. Through its app—now upgraded to the PlasticFreeFuture app—it empowers consumers to scan products and detect microplastic ingredients. The campaign has successfully influenced major brands and governments worldwide to ban microbeads, contributed to EU legislation on microplastics, and certifies products with its “Zero Plastic Inside” label. It also runs global awareness efforts like #NoPlasticsInCosmetics to promote plastic-free beauty.
4Ocean
4ocean is a for-profit, B Corp–certified company founded in 2017 that funds global ocean cleanup efforts by selling sustainably made products like bracelets and apparel. For every item sold, they commit to removing at least one pound of plastic from the ocean through their “One Pound Promise.” They operate full-time cleanup crews in locations such as Florida, Bali, Haiti, and Guatemala. 4ocean tracks its impact using a digital platform that records detailed data on each cleanup, which is verified by third-party auditors. They also run the non-profit 4ocean Foundation to support education and advocacy around ocean conservation.
Plastic soup foundation
The Plastic Soup Foundation runs diverse campaigns to combat plastic pollution and its health impacts. Key projects include Beat the Microbead, targeting microplastics in cosmetics, and Plastic Fashion, which raises awareness about microfibers in clothing. They offer the PlasticFreeFuture app, promote plastic reduction through the Plastic Diet challenge, and provide free educational materials for schools. Other initiatives focus on policy change and corporate accountability, such as the Nurdles Campaign, Plastic Banks Tracker, and tools to measure plastic footprints, along with supporting deposit return systems at train stations.
